Circadian Health Glossary
Chronobiotic
A chronobiotic is a term for any substance or factor that can modify the timing of biological rhythms, especially circadian rhythms. These rhythms, which follow roughly 24-hour cycles, govern various physiological functions such as sleep-wake cycles, hormone release, and body temperature regulation.
Examples of Chronobiotics Include:
-
Light:Exposure to light, especially bright light in the morning.
-
Melatonin: This hormone is produced naturally by the body and helps regulate sleep-wake cycles. It’s also available as a supplement to aid in sleep
-
Caffeine:This stimulant can affect circadian rhythms by increasing alertness and delayingsleeponset.
-
Certain medications: Some medications, such as antidepressants and antihistamines, can interfere with circadian rhythms.
-
Social cues: Social interactions and activities can influence when we feel tired or awake.
