What Is Circadian Rhythm?

Circadian rhythm is the natural, endogenous process that inter alia controls our body's sleep-wake cycle. It is often called our "body clock". It plays a vital role in controlling key functions like hormone production, body temperature, and metabolism.

How Does Circadian Rhythm Work?

Our circadian rhythm is controlled by a region of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which responds to light signals received through our eyes. When we are exposed to bright light, the SCN signals our body to produce hormones that keep us awake and alert. As it gets darker, our body produces melatonin, a hormone that signals darkness to the body, supporting our body clock in its synchronizing process.

This natural cycle rotates on a 24-hour period but can be influenced by factors such as shift work, jet lag, and irregular sleep patterns.

How Does Circadian Rhythm Affect Sleep?

When our circadian rhythm functions properly, we feel alert and awake during the day and we sleep at night. However, disruptions to this rhythm can lead to difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep, which can have negative impacts on our overall health and well-being.

Studies show that chronic disruptions to circadian rhythm, such as those experienced by shift workers, can increase the risk of certain health issues like obesity, diabetes, and depression. This emphasizes the significance of sticking to consistent sleep patterns and enabling our natural biological clocks to operate effectively.
