How Is SAD Diagnosed?

Diagnosing SAD can be challenging as it shares symptoms with other types of depression. However, one of the key criteria in diagnosing SAD is the onset and remission of symptoms with changing seasons. A person must experience two or more consecutive seasonal episodes of depression to be diagnosed with SAD.

To diagnose SAD, a doctor may conduct a physical exam and review the medical history of the patient. They may also ask about specific symptoms and when they occur, as well as any family history of depression or SAD.

Healthcare professionals may use various tools and assessments such as the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ) or the Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale with Seasonal Affective Disorder Supplement. These tools can help determine if a person’s mood changes are related to seasonal patterns.
