Melanopic Lux
A melanopic lux is a unit of measurement tailored to the impact of light on melanopsin, a key player in our biological clock. Often overlooked, light facilitates different metabolic processes, with a deep-seated influence on the circadian rhythm. While traditional lux focuses on illuminance perceived by the human eye, melanopic lux homes in on a quality of light potentially more powerful—its ability to stimulate or suppress melatonin production.
Standard Lux vs. Melanopic Lux
Standard lux meters evaluate total light intensity but do not account for the particular wavelengths of light. However, melanopsin has a heightened sensitivity to specific wavelengths, especially blue light. Consequently, light that contains a higher amount of blue light exerts a more significant influence on our circadian rhythm than light with less blue light, even if their lux readings are identical.
